Buoyage
How do you identify a port-hand lateral mark?

It's a red, can-shaped (flat-topped) buoy or mark, and heading in the conventional direction of buoyage you keep it on your port side.

Tides
What causes a spring tide?

Springs happen when the sun and moon line up with the earth, so their pull combines to produce the largest tidal ranges, roughly every 14 days near new and full moon.

Rules of the road
Two power-driven vessels are approaching each other head-on. What should each do?

Both alter course to starboard and pass port-to-port, rather than trying to work out who has right of way.

Weather
What is a depression, in simple terms?

An area of low pressure where air is rising, cooling and condensing into cloud, which typically brings unsettled weather and stronger wind.

Safety
What is the correct order for the first part of a Mayday call?

Say 'Mayday' three times, then 'this is' and your vessel's name three times, then 'Mayday' and your vessel's name once more.
